Years ago the person who introduced me to USANA told me a fact regarding Biomega that remained with me, and which I have thought about dozens of times over the years. I thought you would REALLY appreciate knowing it too…

He said words to the effect of:

“One of the reasons Biomega is superior is USANA forces nitrogen (an inert gas) through the oil/capsule and that expels the oxygen molecules. This gives Biomega FAR better shelf-life and potency, in a very natural way. As this is a costly process, other vitamin companies do NOT do this important step”.

And I was thinking about this last week, and all the other little facts that I know regarding USANA’s products being superior, and I thought that these facts have given me so much peace of mind and security over the years (not to mention some extra customers) that I really should share them with you.

So last week I contacted one of the head researchers in USANA who I have a great relationship with–Dr John Cuomo. I simply asked him:

“Dr John, why is Biomega better than similar fish supplement products on the market?”

Here is his exact response…

Nick: There are several issues associated with providing the highest quality fish oil available.

FIRST: Double the Concentration

First is the dose of long chain omega-3 fatty acid per dose.  This is the active ingredient in the oil.  Many fish oils use a 18/12 type oil which is supposed to contain 30% by weight total omega-3 and about 18% EPA and 12% DHA.  Now all of the clinical data would indicate that to get the benefits of heart health, and for helping to maintain healthy levels of inflammatory cytokines, that you need to consume about 1 g of total omega-3 (mostly as EPA and DHA) per day.  So you need to take 4 one-gram soft gel capsules to get 1.2 gram total omega -3 from these types of products . 

USANA Biomega is twice as concentrated so you only need to take 2 one-gram capsules to get 1.2 g total omega 3 and over 1 gram EPA+DHA.

SECOND: Based on Many Clinical Trials

Second, we use the same form and concentration of oil, with the same ratio of EPA/DHA  that was studied and proven in many important clinical trials.  This includes the GISSI-Prevenzione trial (the Lancet, vol 354, 447 (1999)) as well as many others. So the oil itself is well documented clinically.

THIRD: Highest Possible Purity and Freshness

Third is purity of the oil.  We use the cleanest oil available anywhere.  Our specifications for contaminants is the best there is, and all lots of the bulk oil are tested to ensure they meet these specifications.

Basically we test for the contaminants that are normally present in fish.  And we set levels that are allowed in the finished fish oil that are at or near the limit of detection for the state of the art analytical test equipment available.

Most fish do get contaminated by ingesting heavy metals, and organic contaminants in their environment.  We do several thing to remove these contaminants.  First most of the contaminants present in the sea accumulate in fish as they grow.  Bigger fish that live longer generally have more contaminants than smaller young fish.  We use only small young fish (anchovies and sardines mainly).

Further we only collect fish from a protected fishery in the south pacific, where contaminants are low.

Next we process the oil by a minimum of two molecular distillations and other proprietary steps to both concentrate the omega-3 and remove any of the contaminants present.

We also do all of the purification steps as well as the storage of the purified oil under inert atmospheres (that is under nitrogen or argon eliminating oxygen which can degrade the oil).  Finally we complete the encapsulation into the soft gel with exclusion of oxygen and with added  natural antioxidant (tocopherols) to ensure it remains fresh.

I just wanted to give you a quick example of the amount of purification were talking about.  In the US the government has been monitoring contaminants in fish for years, and they has an extensive data base on those contaminants.  Canned tuna has as much as 0.853 ppm mercury.  So a single can weighing 6 ¼ oz (177 g) could contain as much as 0.151 mg mercury.  Our limit in the oil is 0.005 ppm (and we have less than that in the oil).  That means we have less than 0.000005 mg in a capsule.  Or in other words at the upper limit allowed, you would have to consume over 30,000 capsules of Biomega before you’d get close to the amount of mercury in one can of tuna. At our daily dose of 2 capsules per day it would take 44 years to consume that much.

Just one note of caution.  With the analytical methods available today, you can measure incredibly small amounts of contaminants.  There is actually no such thing as zero contaminants in anything.  So we can’t  and nobody can claim there is zero contamination in oil.  The amount though is so ridiculously low that in effect there is no contamination.

FOURTH: More Comfort

Finally our formula also contains vitamin D and lemon oil to prevent any burp back that some fish oils induce.

SUMMARY: Taken together  this all adds up to and very clean, concentrated product that no one can beat.
